Maryland VSC: 1.1.D.3.c. Use word structure to determine the meaning of words: contractions, inflectional endings, compound words, root/base words.
The purpose of this lesson is to teach students about compound words and how they are made, which will help them when they need to spell longer words, like compound words, because they will have the knowledge to know that two smaller words make up a compound word. This lesson will also prepare students for reading compound words because they'll have the understanding that a compound words can be broken up into smaller words that they are more familiar with, which will help them to read new words in a story.
