The purpose of this lesson is for students to learn that scientists know about animals that lived long ago by the fossils that were left behind. Students come to this understanding by digging through sand like scientists would using spoons and brushes to brush off fossils and analyzing what these fossils can tell them about the animals that lived long ago. Students will also realize that fossils can be parts of animals or other non-living objects of Earth.
