Maryland VSC:
Maryland VSC:
- 3.3.B.1.a. Use magnifying instruments to observe and describe using drawings or text (oral or written) minute organisms, such as brine, shrimp, algae, aphids, etc that are found in different environments.
- 3.3.B.1.b. Describe any observable activity displayed by these organisms.
- 3.3.B.1.c. Provide reasons that support the conclusion that these organisms are alive.
- 3.3.B.1.d. Use information gathered about these minute organisms to compare mechanisms they have to satisfy their basic needs to those used by larger organisms.
The purpose of this lesson is for students to decide if yeast is alive and what are the best conditions for yeast growth by conducting a yeast experiment. Before beginning the experimentation, the class will come up with a list of characteristics that make something alive or not by comparing a stuffed animal otter to a video of a live otter at the zoo.
